The charges has been filed along with10 other charges against 9 persons including Sabaragamuwa provincial council UNP member Upul Shyamal Bandara for raping a 16 year old girl from Mawanella around 2nd December 2010.
The accused pleaded not guilty for the charges filed against them. Accordingly High Courts Judge A.A.R. Heyyanthuduwa ordered the suspects to be bailed out on two accounts on a fine of Rupees two lakhs each.
It was a highlight that the defender vehicle belonging to the Provincial Council member was allowed in to the courts premises to escort the bailed out provincial council member.
This took place in a background where only the judges and the judicial staff are permitted to bring their vehicles into the courts premises. It was astonishing to witness a bailed out suspect receive such facilities within the court premises.
On an earlier occasion we were able to witness a large crowd awaiting to welcome provincial council member Upul Shyamal Bandara after he was bailed out on account of the same incident at the Mawanella courts.
