The Ministry of Transport states that motorcycles are responsible for 42% of fatal accidents, while 12% includes lorries and tippers.
Furthermore, 40% of the people who die in road accidents in a day are motorcyclists, with 30% being pedestrians and 9% being cyclists.
It is also reported that 47% of accidents in the country occur between 6 pm and 10 pm.
These facts were revealed at a function held at the Makumbura Multipurpose Transport Center yesterday to coincide with the International Day of Remembrance for Road Accident Victims.
Speaking at the event, Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that the compensation paid to the dependents of those killed in unidentified road accidents and those who sustain injuries must be increased.
