The National STD/AIDS Control Programme stated that they are ready to give the medicinal drugs to those who are at high risk of being infected with HIV but are not infected with the virus.
Programme Director, specialist Dr. Rasanjali Hettiarachchi, said the main purpose was to control the virus.
According to the data of the National STD/AIDS Control Programme, around 3,700 persons have been diagnosed with HIV. But only about 2,600 people are referred for treatment.
That number has dropped in the face of the current COVID pandemic, with only 363 reported seeking treatment.
As a solution to this, Specialist Dr. Rasanjali Hettiarachchi stated that a program has already been launched to provide self-HIV test kits free of charge.
