The strike organized by the Federation of Graded Railway Workers Union this afternoon has been suspended.
Convener of the organization Janaka Fernando told our news team that the decision was made following discussions between his organization and the General Manager this morning.
The strike was planned against non payment of new salary scales to Station masters, supervisors, observing managers, and engine drivers which were approved by the Cabinet.
Convener Janaka Fernando further said that the strike was suspended on a pledge made by the General Manager of the Railway Department.
Meanwhile the trade union action launched by engine drivers following an assault on one of their fellow drivers at Ragama Railway station has been halted. A group of passengers allegedly assaulted the engine driver of a train bound for Rambukkana last evening. The passengers claimed that the engine driver was drunk thereby causing a serious delay.
More than 20 office trains were cancelled this morning due to trade union actions.
However the Railway Department stated that investigations revealed the engine driver had fallen sick after his sugar level and blood pressure had increased.
Locomotive Engineers Trade Union General Secretary K.A. U. Konthasinghe told our news team that legal action would be taken against the passengers who were involved in the assault.
