The 66 year old Payagala Liyana Arachchige Ranjith Fernando  who is aresident of Mahiyangana –Dambarawa area states it all began when he rescued a boy who came to pluck mangoes was rescued by him when the boy was drowning.

The residents aswell as the visitors to the area make use of the  Viyana river.


Since this man has saved many lives at the river the residents of the area refer to him as merman of Dambana. The sympathetic old man risks his own life to save many other  lives.
