A mother revealed before the High Court of Amapara yesterday (7th) that her husband killed their baby an year and a month old by striking it thrice on the floor, as the lawsuit regarding the incident was taken into hearing before High Court Judge Justice Sumudu Premachandra.
The incident had taken place on 26th March last year. She said that as they went to the market that day asked her to stay with the child in the vicinity till he came back with the goods.
Later her husband had taken the child into his hands and since it had started to cry, had shaken it violently and struck it on its back on the floor. Seeing him do it twice she had intervened and tried to save the child, when she received hard blows on the head and the back. Also he had picked up the fallen child and twisted an arm before striking it down again.
“When the child was struck on the floor for the third time its eyes were rolled up and was obviously suffocated, yet every time I tried to pick it up he prevented me by hitting me hard on the head and the back. While he was still continuing the blows I carried the child and hurried away to a house nearby. Then he threatened me not to tell anyone that I went to the market with him, and to tell only that the child fell on the floor and died.
He didn’t even accompany us to the hospital and did not give any support.”
This woman is Milani Preethika from Kekirihena, Mahaoya, Ampara and she had made use of a doll with the permission of the Judge to demonstrate how the child was killed.
The High Court Judge ordered to postpone further investigations till the 5th of November.
