A 25-year-old woman who learned that her ex-boyfriend has published after her wedding her photographs shot about 6 months prior to her wedding has committed suicide by hanging herself.
Giving evidence as to the incident Amith, an elder brother of the young woman Anusha who was a resident of Welangolla, Thisogama said that she had married a person called Sandun from Welangolla.
“I came to know a few days ago that my sister had had a relationship with another guy before marriage and that he was threatening my sister about the photographs she had taken with him then.
I saw that the person by the name Sujith Sagara had published those images on FaceBook; even my sister must have known that.
Our family and sister’s husband discussed about the issue and decided to lodge a complaint about the person Sujith Sagara. My mother, uncle and sister made a complaint to the Bingiriya police regarding the incident on 4th, October.
Later mother and uncle returned home, leaving my sister at the house in Welangolla.
Later our uncle was informed by a phone call that my sister had hung herself in a room inside the house, followed by our immediate departure to the house in Welangolla. There I saw her hanging from a beam in the roof suspended by a strap of cloth.
The strap of cloth was cut and the body was pulled down before it was taken to the Bingiriya Hospital and a lady doctor declared her dead after examining her body.
We have no suspicion about her death. My opinion is that she suffered distress and mortification following what the person called Sujith with whom she had an affair earlier had committed, which led her to this fatal action against herself.”
This is what the husband of the suicide victim had to say:
“We got married on 27th, Aug 2015. After the marriage too she worked in the garment factory in Bingiriya where she used to work earlier as well.
2 or 3 days ago a person called Sujith in Kahawala called me on my phone and said that my wife had an affair with him about 6 months ago. He added that he had photos of hers taken earlier in his possession and asked me to inform her of his decision to publish them on FB.”
Considering the post mortem reports and the evidence provided Coroner Investigator Mr. Rupasinghe concluded that the death of Anusha Maduwanthi was caused by hanging herself.
