Police attacked disabled war veterans and members of civil societies with tear gas to disperse them, as they protested at the Ministry of Defence premises.
Police has used tear gas when the protesters attempted to break into the Presidential Secretariat.
Disabled war veterans, representatives of civil groups and Bhikkhu organizations gathered in front of the Defence Ministry this morning.
Police closed the road from Lotus roundabout and Galle Face roundabout as protestors blocked it.
Later, disabled war heroes’ organization’s Chairman and five others were led to a discussion with the Defence Secretary.
A protest was started by disabled war heroes in front of Fort Railway Station demanding a pension 7 days ago. The protest was converted to a fast unto death on Friday.
Sinhala Ravaya, Ravana Balaya and several other Bhikkshu organizations were present in front of the Defence Ministry to show solidarity towards protestors. Ravana Balaya Chairman Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera commented on the matter in this manner.
Meanwhile, an injunction sought by Fort Police to prevent a protest by disabled war heroes and several other organizations in front of Defence Ministry was rejected by Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna.
