Seven in the same family died in a motor traffic accident near Galigamuwa in Colombo- Kandy main road. First three died on the spot and later four others, who were treated at the ICU, also passed away.
The driver, a family member, of the vehicle they were travelling in has attempted to overtake another vehicle when a bus heading from the opposite direction crashed onto them.
The deceased are Retired Army Sergeant Major Athula Senanayaka, 56, his wife a nurse attached to the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital Mangalika Peiris, 55, their sons Thisara Gimath, 21, student at the Kotelawala Defence University, Savin Senanayaka who was a student at the Urupola Madya Maha Vidyalaya and their sister Sammani Senanayaka, 19, who was a student at the Veyagoda Bandaranaike Madya Maha Vidyalaya, and Athula’s brother businessman Dani Shantha Senanayaka, 55, his wife who worked as a nurse in Ragama Hospital Badra Airangani, 55.
They were returning home from Kandy when they met with the accident.
Retired Army Sergeant Major Athula Senanayaka has driven the vehicle.
Athula, Mangalika, Airangani and Thisara died on 23rd and Dani and Sammani, who were being treated at the Kegalle hospital and Savinda who was at the Peradeniya hospital succumbed to their injuries yesterday (24).
