CCTV footage of the girls who were hit and killed by a train in Dehiwala area were released yesterday. The footage showing them running towards the oncoming train has sparked debate among many.

Imeshi Perera and Sheron Sweleen, both 18, died tragically in the accident at around 6.30 pm on Monday (25).

Imeshi’s mother who knew that she was attending the ill-fated party said that she does not suspect her daughter’s death.

A close friend of Imeshi’s family said that the two girls were planning to surprise their friends at the birthday party they were heading to.

He said, “Imeshi was very good at athletics and net ball. She was to sit for her Advanced Level Examination this year. April 25th was her last day at school and that was also the birth day of a close friend.

“To celebrate this event, friends have got together and arranged a birthday party on his behalf. For this they have selected a restaurant near Mount Lavinia. Meanwhile, Imeshi and her friend have planned to surprise their friends.

“On that evening they have dodged a train heading from Galle to Colombo but was knocked down by the train that was hailing from Colombo to Kalutara North.

“Witnesses say that the two were wearing ear phones too. But the loss of her life is immense. We can’t come into terms with what happened.”

Imeshi’s last rites will take place today (27) at 3.00pm in Borella Cemetery.

Meanwhile, Sharon’s brother opened up about what had happened.

“Nangi (younger sister) has gone to Dehiwala area after school to attend the birthday party. They have seen three friends in the party and crossed the railway line all excited to meet them. This is when they were hit by the train.

“There are three in my family- father, sister and myself. Our mother is deceased. On 24th she (Imeshi) said that she will go directly to the party in Dehiwala after school the other day.

“At 7.30pm we got a call from a friend of hers saying she was hospitalized after meeting with an accident.

“When we went to Dehiwala, she was taken to Dehiwala Railway Station and then taken to Kalubowila Hospital.

“My sister was to sit for the Advanced Level Examination this year. She was a student at the Holy Family Convent in Bambalapitiya.”

Also talking about the sudden loss of her daughter Imeshi’s mother Taniya Veronica Perera said, “She was my eldest daughter. She is 18 years old. She informed me that she would go to the birthday party in Dehiwala.

“My husband was not well that day and went for a medical checkup. During that time he received several calls on his mobile phone. It was about 7.20pm. I couldn’t answer the calls because we were with the doctor. I called the number back after the checkup. Then we found that our daughter has met with an accident in Dehiwala area.

“When we were coming from Kelaniya, we were asked not to go to Dehiwala but come directly to the Kalubowila Hospital.

“We identified the body at the mortuary. We do not suspect her death.”
