Wildlife Director General H. D. Ratnayake said that the elephant calf that had been with the Magistrate Thilina Gamagey was brought in a vehicle and handed over to the wildlife office by a group of the Magistrate’s servants.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamagey had sent a letter earlier to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.

It had been stated in the letter that the elephant that had been in his possession had been registered at the Wildlife Conservation Department under the name of Dissanayake Bandaagey Chandraratne Yatavara resident at the address Number 409, Ovitigama, Meegoda.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate had stated in his letter that he had bought the said elephant after checking the Wildlife Department documents relevant to the elephant’s registration pertinent to permit number 334 and ensuring the accuracy of the said particulars.

It was further stated in the letter that subsequently he had requested the Wildlife Department for the transfer of the elephant permit to him and that accordingly approval had been given for it.

Meanwhile The CID and the Wildlife Department started digging the premises of Vipashyaramaya in Maharagama, in search of carcasses of two elephant calves, allegedly buried in the temple premises yesterday.

They have also sought the assistance of the Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology of the Kelaniya University.

A complaint was lodged by Deputy Minister of Tourism Wasantha Senanayake, requesting to investigate removal of elephant calves from jungles.

This was initiated following the information obtained from Niraj Roshan alias Ali Roshan who is now in remand custody, with regard to the investigation over 11 wild elephants.

Accordingly, CID informed the Colombo chief Magistrate those carcasses of two elephant calves have been buried in the temple premise of Vipashyaramaya in Maharagama.

Later, Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya has ordered the Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology of the Kelaniya University to inspect the respective temple premises.
