The incident in Dematagoda, where a 10-year-old student and her mother were killed in a motor-traffic accident involving a car driven by a teenager, rocked Sri Lanka. Till late the 15-year-old driver and his mother chose not to speak about the incident.
This is how they testified before the court.
“The car, driven by my son, knocked on the mother and daughter who crossed the pedestrian crossing. After the hit they were thrown off and then they fell on the ground,” Sakila Banu, 33, said.
She added, “On 16.01.2016 my son was driving a car belonging to my husband’s company. We were going to the Dematagoda Food City. My son is 15 year old. He is studying at an international school in Dematagoda. My husband was abroad on the day of the accident.
“I have another child. We were on our way to buy milk powder to the child. My son was driving the car and I was in the passenger’s seat. He doesn’t have a driving license. When he was driving this mother and daughter crossed the pedestrian crossing suddenly.
“We did not expect them to cross this way. When they did, the car knocked on them. They fell. People by the road came and rushed the two to the hospital. Thinking that the people there would get violent my brother took me home. That night the Dematagoda Police came and took my son. I accept that I gave permission to my son to drive the car.”
Also giving evidence at the court the young driver Fareed Faruk said, “On 16.01.2016 my mother wanted to go to the Food City. I took her in my father’s vehicle. My father taught me to drive. I was driving for over a year now. I always drove under the supervision of my father. I was driving with my mother for the first time on the day this accident took place.
“When I was driving towards Dematagoda through Baseline road when the mother and daughter crossed the road. I saw them only when they came very close. I was driving at a speed of 60-70km per hour and because of this I couldn’t control the vehicle. Then they knocked on the car.
“Later my uncle came and took me home. He took me away because the people were agitated about what had happen. That night the police came and arrested me.”
Colombo City Coroner concluded that the two victims died of injuries to head, neck and chest area due to the motor traffic accident.
