Year 2015 was a remarkable year for Sri Lankan. At the dawn of New Year, Hiru reviewed the most discussed incidents in Sri Lanka.

Year 2015 started with a massive political controversy after Mahinda Rajapaksha was defeated by the General Secretary of his party (SLFP), Maithreepala Sirisena. nA coalition of parties led by the United National Party accepted Maithreepala Sirisena as a Common Candidate and many SLFP giants turned their backs to then president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.


Mahinda Rajapaksa left the Temple Trees followed by the defeat at Presidential Election while many MR supporters left Sri Lanka.


Sri Lankan politics was burning with investigating frauds said to have happened during Rajapaksa’s regime.


Meanwhile, hoppers hit Sri Lankan news for being a food with mystic political value. That was after Rajapaksa revealed that Sirisena had hoppers with him the day before Sirisena came out as the Common Candidate.


Some renowned astrologists were humiliated and had to shrink their profiles for number of challenges they have made claiming Rajapaksa regime could not be defeated for decades.

The incumbent’s term started under the theme ‘Maithree Paalanayak- a new country in 100 days’.

Among the most delightful moments of 2015 was the apostolic visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Sri Lanka.

The film ‘Maharaja Gemunu” which came as the latest addition to the Sri Lankan cinema comes to the forefront during this time.

Also the Temple tree mansion is opened for parliamentarians as well as for the public after the political revolution.

Meanwhile Avant-Garde vessel loaded with weapons emerged from Galle harbor.

While conducting investigations about the above Mervin Silva who was in Mahinda Rajapaksha’s team made a controversial statement that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is responsible for the murders of group of persons including Lasantha Wickrmathunga and Bharatha Lakshman.

While regarding the above statement being discussed far and wide in the country general Sarath Fonseka was acquitted of all charges which were leveled against him.

Also it is a specialty that HIRU TV receiving an international award. HIRU mobile portal won this international award competing competitors from nearly 160 countries.

Meanwhile, Hiru TV hosted Shreya Ghoshal Live in Concert in Havelock’s Ground. The concert was praised by thousands of Shreya Goshal fans across the Island.

As a Cricket Nation, Sri Lanka was saddened by the retirement of the ‘Gentlemen of Sri Lankan Cricket’- Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena.

Australia walked away as Champions at the Cricket World Cup- 2015.

Meanwhile, the assassination of the Incumbent’s brother was widely discussed.

2015 rang wedding bells to a number of stars in various fields. Sri Lankan Cricketer- Dinesh Chandimal, former Miss Sri Lanka Aruni Rajapaksa, famous actresses- Ishara Sandamini, Lochana Imashi, Piumi Boteju, well known all-round Natasha Perera, Prihan and reality star Pradeep Rangana are among them.

Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa who left the country followed by his brother’s defeat in Presidential Election, returned to Sri Lanka. He was arrested soon after his arrival.

Meanwhile, the country was shaken by fear when a series of rape cases and murders were reported from all over the Island. Vidya, a Tamil girl from Jaffna and Seya Sadewmi, a little girl from Kotadeniyawa were mourned by the Nation for the brutality of their deaths. These cases urged Sri Lanka to reconsider activating capital punishment.

A man known as ‘Kondaya’ and 17 year old school boy who were taken into custody as suspects of Seya’s murder. The way they were treated by the Police was highly criticized by the public once the DNA tests prove that Seya has been murdered by Saman Jayalath, Kondaya’s brother.

Sri Lankan entertainment industry was saddened by the deaths of Tony Ranasinghe and Sunil Hettiarachchi, two artists with different and unprecedented talent.

The death of Most Rev. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero was mourned the whole country despite religious or ethnic differences. The void generated in the society from Most Rev. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero’s death will never be filled.

Meanwhile, the Parliament was dissolved and a party consisting of a number of political parties won the General Election. Followed by this, Ranil Wickramasinghe took oaths as Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister.

Further, common folks made into headlines through a number of incidents.

CCTV scenes were helpful in investigating a number of murders in 2015. The murderer of the corpse found in a bag in Bastian Road was one such instance. CCTV scenes also revealed how President’s Security defenders crushed six people on road.

A number of videos shared in Facebook hit Sri Lankan internet news arena in 2015. Some of these were highly criticized by the public while some other videos generated fun.

Several cases of children caging their old parents in animal cages and taking animals into house made the society question the morals we live with.

The Court Order of the murder of Mohamed Shiyam which was dragging for years was given when former DIG Vaas Gunawardena was convicted with death sentence.

Also the abduction incident of a youth by the security guards of Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra which was talked about far and wide in the country.

The society still deploring the Enrique Iglesias’s concert which was organized by the Live Events Company owned by Mahela Jeyawardena and Kumar Sangakkara for the financial fraud and the degradation of the culture of Sri Lanka.
