A-32-year old mother of one had jumped into Nilwala River from the Mahanama-Samaraweera Bridge in Matara in an attempt to commit suicide, the Police Media Sources states.
An eye witness stated to us that the water current at the river was rapid due to the heavy rains and the woman who was weeping near the bridge jumped into the river suddenly and further stated that no one came forward to rescue her. He had taken a few photographs of the incident and had sent to us.
The woman had allegedly jumped into the Nilwala River when the husband had gone to a mobile service provider along with the son, to get a detailed bill of the wife’s phone, adding further Police sources stated.
Nevertheless, the woman who was struggling in the water for several minutes was rescued by residents of the area.
