“When the loop was already on someone came along imploring not to hang” “Killed five and went to prison; killed another there”
Perhaps you have heard about the guy who avenged several criminals including the policeman who raped and murdered his sister, by following them and murdering them as well. Perhaps it could also be the first time you hear this story. He is called after the name ‘Hithumathe Jeevithe’ or ‘Idler’.
Hithumathe Jeevithe’ who was in jail for several years together with ‘Marusira’ and later escaped jail and avenged those who committed the ignominious crime against his sister, is in Kalutara at the moment.
I got aboard the morning train from Kurunegala to go to Colombo. I am seated and am checking the day’s news on my mobile phone.
After some time I hear a person seated in front of me saying something. I pretend not to hear, but again I see that he is trying to tell me something. He is actually addressing me.
“Do you have Youtube in there?” He asked me.
“Yes, why?”
“Type Hithumathe Jeevithe”
With those words I recognized at once who the fellow is. He is no one else but the protagonist of a news story I prepared an year ago. He is B. D. Sumathipala by name – a chap who was ordered to the gallows over several murders and was finally released.
I came to know through a friend that Hithumathe Jeevithe is now free and that he had been in prison with Rohana Wijeweera, Vijaya Kumaratunga, Mahinda Rajapaksa and Marusira, and that he is at the moment sojourning at a temple in Kuliyapitiya.
The next morning I went to Kuliyapitiya, prepared a news item on him and took the initiative to broadcast it the next day. His history is a fairly long one. To describe it in brief: a young woman who came up New Year queen at a certain Sinhala New Year Festival about 40 years ago, was abducted by a group of men including a policeman and was afterwards raped and killed, and this person who is our protagonist has later killed all involved in the incident. The young woman concerned is none other than Hithumathe’s sister. He has a tattoo on his chest which says ‘Hithumathe Jeevithe’, and he was coined the name by Marusira who was hung at the Bogambara prison, who was also the subject of the film ‘Siripala-Ranmenika’.
‘Hithumathe Jeevithe’ is in destitute state now without a specific place to live. When I met him in the train he had been traveling from Anuradhapura.
