“I drowned, but just then a wave came by and I could clutch onto a piece of rock.”
The body of the little girl who was pushed to the sea by the father the night before the last at Kosgoda has been washed ashore at Mahapelena.
The suspect was arrested yesterday morning, while he was hiding in the neighbourhood, of Kaikawala in Kosgoda. He is scheduled, to be produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate, tomorrow.
The suspect had taken his wife and daughter of two at 10.00pm in the night, pretending that he was taking them to visit a friend. Later, he had led the unsuspecting wife and the daughter onto the peak of a rock by the sea and suddenly pushed them down.
It is reported that the girl disappeared after the fall, and the wife fell beneath the rock, and escaped drowning.
The police Media Spokesperson’s office, stated the wife who fled the scene, had later complained about the incident to the Kosgoda police.
Thus she explained how she escaped death at the fall:
“He took me and the child to the rock cliff and pushed us in. When I felt a bit doubtful and turned, I can just remember falling into the water. The child didn’t fall with me. A huge wave broke near the rock crevice, and she probably fell there. He might have witnessed the child falling. I was almost drowned, but while I was drowning a wave came by and I was able to take hold of something resembling a rock. I clasped it and scrambled ashore with great difficulty.”
The suspect is a 29 year old, who works as a mason. The police found that the suspect has a secret affair with another woman in the area, and the man and his wife had constant quarrels due to this issue. It is mentioned that the relevant woman is elder than him.
