Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka referred to an incident which took place during his imprisonment, during the Salakuna program broadcast by Hiru TV.
He disclosed what he had to experience during those hard times as well as how his family was harassed. He further said that his wife was restricted from coming to see him while in remand. Also he said that they caused the marriage of his daughter to break.
However we heard that former President Mahinda Rajapakse had been talking cordially to Sarath Fonseka on the occasion PM Ranil Wickramasinghe swore-in. Mr Fonseka said that he (Mahinda) tried to talk to him but that he ignored him.
Mr Fonseka said that if he was anyway inclined to speak at that moment he was more than ready to recap the past for him.
The conversation which took place is as follows:
Rangana, the announcer: What would you have said if you did happen to talk at that moment?
Field Marshal Fonseka: He asked me how I am. It did not suit the occasion to talk about such incidents as happened in the past. It was a very difficult time we had to undergo – we were avenged, harassed, even my daughter’s marriage was sabotaged. They are accountable for all that. I was taken away with no regard to my rights or my dignity. With no litigation I was kept in jail for 8 months. My wife was allowed to see me only once a day for 15 minutes within that whole period of 8 months.
Usually even for a prisoner in jail, the family is allowed to see him thrice a day and bring food. On some days wife was sent back without being allowed to see me – that is how we were treated.
Rangana, the announcer: You are in tears. Shouldn’t it be a rare occurrence that Sarath Fonseka is weeping?
Field Marshal Fonseka: Yes, but it is painful to recall their ignominious treatment of us.
