Jayani Swetha Jayakody (32) and her sister Samadhi Navodya Jayakody (29) had been an inspiration for Nochchiyagama, which is a rural village in Anuradhapura.
Both sisters were hard workers. More importantly, both of them were graduates, a rarity in this area.
After obtaining their degrees, the sisters joined the public service.
Jayani was working at the Audit Division of the North Central Health Ministry while Samadhi was an energetic teacher at Nochchiyagama, Ambagahawewa Vidyalaya.
The area residents said that the two sisters always move around together in their motorcycle.
As usual, on Thursday, the sisters left their home to reach their respective offices in their motorcycle.
However, it was their last journey. But nobody expected an untimely death to this young souls.
A lorry driven by a cattle rustler hit their motorcycle head-on at around 7.30 am, at Bulathkulama on the Anuradhapura – Puttalam main road unexpectedly.
One of them died instantaneously and the other died at Anuradhapura Hospital.
Police say the lorry, which was transporting 18 cattle illegally, was driven at high speed as it was given chase by a police vehicle.
The lorry after hitting the motorcycle had veered off the road. The villagers took the sisters to the hospital, but it was too late.
Sri Lanka lost two more energetic young women due to a reckless act of a money-hungry individual.
Following the accident, the villagers had assaulted the driver of the lorry and he was later admitted to Anuradhapura Hospital with police protection.
