Prof. Chandana Jayaratne, Department of Physics at the University of Colombo says he has received information on the recent meteorite explosion from few areas of the Southern part of the country.

He said certain residents in Hakmana told him that sand like particles had fallen onto their roofs. He said he is trying to verify facts about this.

Prof. Jayaratne said this type of explosions could happen in future too.

Meanwhile, recently NASA reported that a meteor with the explosive power of ten cruise missiles has struck the Moon, sparking a massive explosion visible with the naked eye.

But that will be dwarfed if Asteroid 2012 TC4 which is heading Earthwards this week actually strikes the Moon.2012 TC4 is expected to skim the Moon and whizz past the Earth in one of our nearest misses to date.

But predicting asteroid behavior is a fraught business and nothing is certain.

NASA scientists captured an earlier terrifying 56,000 mph collision on video – believed to be the biggest Moon collision ever.

The footage was used by NASA scientists to highlight the catastrophic danger planet Earth faces from similar meteors – was caused by a space rock weighing no more than 88 lbs (40 kilos).

Despite the meteor’s tiny proportions – about the size of a small boulder and the weight of an average 10-year-old boy – the impact damage was colossal and the explosion shone with the brightness of a magnitude 4 star.
