An autonomous drone aerial vehicle that can transport humans will start ferrying passengers around Dubai this summer.
The Chinese built Ehang 184 "autonomous aerial vehicle" is able to transport one passenger and their bag for up to 23 minutes and the head of Dubai's transportation agency, Mattar al-Tayer said that self-flying taxis would start taking people across Dubai city starting from July.
Dubai city will use the Ehang 184 for its airborne service. The Ehang is a drone that can fly without any human direction or intervention and carry a single passenger and their bag. It can take one person on a journey up to 23 minutes long.
Dubai has already experimented successfully flying this robot air taxi in Dubai skies.
The Ehang air taxi is electric-powered and can travel for about 31 miles with one person and bag that weigh up to 100kg. It can travel at speeds of up to 63 miles an hour and takes two hours to charge fully.
In order to call for a flying taxi all passengers will need to do is enter their destination into an app. The drone will then map the route and transport the passenger to their desired destination. The air taxi cannot fly directly and will have to hop from one set landing spot to another.
As it lands, its propellers would fold inwards so it can fit in a single car parking space.
Designed to be absolutely secure, the autonomous drone vehicle has a "fail safe" system that prompts it to land in the nearest safest place if anything malfunctions or disconnects, according to the Chinese manufacturing company. The amazing air taxi can also communicate via encrypted channels.
