The man, Upul Kithsiri, was shot by the estate security officer when he was stealing coconuts. Police said he was shot with bullets that are used to shoot birds.
Relatives of the deceased said a person should not be shot for stealing a coconut. “Is a life worth only Rs. 50?” they asked.
They added that if the man was shot in the leg they could have taken him home and treated.
“He has even said ‘Lal uncle, please don’t shoot me’ but still he was shot,” they explained.
Weliweriya police arrested the shooter and he was remanded till 12th next month.
