As the result of medical officers’ strike yesterday, daily activities in hospitals across the island were badly affected. Patients who visited hospitals seeking medical assistance were left distraught and helpless.
The strike that commences at 8.00am continued till 12.00pm.
Medical officers were protesting against the SAITM private medical college in Malabe and the government's plan to sign the ETCA with India.
According to the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) 14,000 doctors from 1500 hospitals, including teaching hospitals, took part in the strike.
The GMOA was be backed by All Ceylon Government Medical Officers' Association, Government Dental Surgeons Association, and Government Ayurveda Medical Officers' Association.
In addition to this Government Family Health Services Officers Association, All Ceylon Nurses’ Union, Health Services Union, Ward Clerks Association and Health Services Telephone Operators Association will also join the strike.
The OPD sections and clinics were left completely crippled as a result.
However, maternity hospitals, children’ hospitals and wards treating kidney patients remained active.
After ending the strike GMOA called a special press conference to discuss their future plans.
Meanwhile, protesting against the medical college students of all medical faculties across the country launched a separate protest at 4.00pm yesterday.
