Sasanka Jagath Alwis, from Royal College is a smart kid. In addition to his studies he was enrolled in extra-curricular activities such as basketball, swimming and wushu.
Sasanka, who was a boy scout, also participated in dancing events such as the 2012 Kandy Perahera along with other Royalists. But all of this changed on March 02, 2013.
“When I went to the school, no one was there at the pool,” Sasanka’s mother remembers that unfaithful day. “I asked a group of students who was flocked at a corner about my son. They looked at me as if they were scared about something.
“Then I asked the sir there. He said that Sasanka was taken to the hospital after he was found inside the pool. I cried and collapsed. He (sir) put me into a three-wheeler and took me to the hospital. At that time Sananka was in the Intensive Care Unit.”
Sasanka was in a coma and was at the ICU for three months and 14 days. Later he was transferred to the Ragama Rehabilitation hospital, where he was treated for three and half years.
Sasanka is now at home.
His mother, who is a single parent and had no income at the time, has gone to see the school principal in three occasions. After hearing her story the principal has promised to call a committee to look into the matter. By this time their story was published in the media.
“When my brother went to meet the principal he had asked to do anything we want with the media and that he wouldn’t do anything for us. But the parents were good to me, they released cows and organized Bodhi puja’s. They came to see me.”
Now, their story is due to take an ugly turn. As a result of ongoing development projects, the house Sasanka and his family are living in will soon be teared down.
“Sasanka was born on the day his father’s cremation was taking place. I put him to a good school to make him a good citizen. He was to do the G.C.E Ordinary Level last year. He was telling me not to worry and that he will get nine As. He wanted to be a pilot. I never thought that something like this would happen to my son. He is a good son. I raised him well,” his mother said amidst tears.
Now she is asking the President, Prime Minister and National Housing Development to give them a house to live in.
Sasanka’s family was informed by the Road Development Authority to leave their house today.
