It was reported recently about a young woman from Ragama who was killed at the Fort railway station.

As the crowd was a-stir from the accident, a particular person had come to see who had died when trying to board the train. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw that it was none other than his own daughter.

It was everyone’s wish to be heading home as soon as possible. The Fort station was teeming with people bound for home.

In this haste many are used to try and jump into the train even before it stops. Despite its obvious danger most of them just disregard safety on railway, and a young woman paid with her life before everybody’s eyes.

The young woman who was killed is Sherin Loreta Joseph residing at 362/C/2, Etakorasa Road, Ragama.

She had been the only child and the pet of the family.

She had left home as usual on last 21st to go to work having worshipped and bidden her parents and adieu with a smile.  No one ever thought at that moment that she will never be coming back to light the house. Neither did anyone think that her return will be such that would make the whole village weep.

Having finished her work for the day Sherin arrived at the station as usual by the staff service van. She came to the Fort station at about 5.30pm to catch the 5.45 train from Panadura to Puttalam. But the train was canceled and she resolved to go home by the 6.05 train.

The cancellation of one train meant that an extremely large crowd was gathered for the 6.05 train. Sherin called her father because she knew that he too was due to catch the same train. With the arrival of the train she was pushed forward with the massive crowd. Suddenly the bag of someone on foot board struck Sherin and she fell instantly to the railway line between the train and the platform. Although the train had halted with the shouts of thousands, Sherin was bleeding heavily, having had a lethal blow on her head struck by the train.

Sherin’s father James had dialed her phone as soon as it was heard that a young woman was run down by the train. When there was no reply he had instantly got off the train and walked towards where the accident had occurred. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw what he saw...

Although immediate action was taken to transport her to the General Hospital, every effort of doctors to save her life was in vain.

The unexpected death of the young lady sent shockwaves through the whole village.
