Speaking regarding the efforts to procure a COVID vaccine on behalf of the Sri Lankan people, Senior Advisor to President Lalith Weeratunga stated that he is hopeful that a vaccine would be made available to the locals prior to the dawn of the 2021 Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
He further stated that frontline workers including nurses will be vaccinated first followed by personnel of the Armed Forces and the Police.
He also pointed out that beginning the vaccination programme by inoculating first responders was the recommendation of the World Health Organization as well.
Weeratunga further noted that funds required for this feat were allocated by the State Treasury.
