Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has informed the president’s commission investigating fraud and corruption in state institutions that as he is unable to appear before the commission today, he will appear before commission on the 23rd of October.
The commission sources noted that the prime minister had stated that he is unable to appear before the commission as he has several functions to attend in Jaffna.
Accordingly, the prime minister has requested the commission to make arrangements for him to appear before the commission on the 23rd of October for which the commission has agreed.
It was revealed that owing to election promises made a decision was made to store paddy at the Mattala airport.
This is according to the evidence provided by the former chairman of the paddy marketing board, Bandara Dissanayake.
It was also revealed that the former chairman had been in discussion with the airport authorities in 2015 on obtaining a storage facility at the Mattala airport owing to the lack of paddy storage facilities, for which the airport authorities had vehemently disagreed due to the expensive circuits and air conditioning systems the facility is equipped with.
Accordingly, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and minister Daya Gamage have been requested to appear before the commission.
However the commission sources noted that minister Daya Gamage is to testify before the commission with regard to the incident at 9.30 am today.
Meanwhile notice was previously issued to former defense secretary Hemasiri Fernando to appear before the presidents commission at 9.30 am today.
This is pertaining to large scale fraud that had taken place when fixing the computerized system in a state bank.
Former defense secretary Hemasiri Fernando had been the chairman during this period and he is currently in remand custody in connection to the easter Sunday attacks.
The president’s commission sources further noted that the notice has been issued through the commissioner general of prisons.
