Owing to the heavy rains, Galle and Matara districts have been adversely affected.
As a result it has been decided that all schools in the Galle and Matara districts will be closed today and tomorrow.
The department of irrigation says that owing to the heavy rains the water levels of Nilvala, Ging and Kalu Rivers have risen.
Heavy flooding has been reported from the Nilwala river in Paanadugama area as well.
Further, the disaster management center noted that the water levels of Gin ganga has risen from the Baddegama area and the Kalu river from Millakanda area.
Owing to the rise of water levels in the Nilwala river, it has been informed that the those living in the low lying areas of Matara, Kadawath sathara, Thihagoda, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Athuraliya, Akuressa, Pitabeddara and Weligama exercise caution.
Further owing to the inclement weather, 9 houses in the Galle district have been completely damaged while 66 houses have been partially damaged.
89 homes have been partially damaged in the Matara district while over 3500 individuals of1308 families belonging to 96 grama seva divisions have been displaced according to the galle district secretariat, Somaratne Vidanapathirana.
In addition, the Irrigation Department informed that as a result of rising water levels of Ging Ganga and Kalu Ganga people in Baddegama, Bope-Poddala, Nagoda, Tavalama, Neluwa, Agalawatta, Bulathsinhala, Horana, and Ingiriya too should be on the alert.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre has taken steps to extend the land slide warning to Matara district as well in addition to the Kegalle, Galle and Kalutara districts.
