St. Sebastian’s Church, Katuwapitiya, that was damaged in the Easter Sunday attacks will reopen today.

The reopening coincides with the third month since the deadly suicide bombings.

The church will be handed over to the Archbishop Malcom Cardinal Ranjith, who will host a special mass at 8 a.m.

Following the mass and religious observances, the foundation stone for a new Sunday school will be laid.

An Army Soldier was killed and 8 others were injured when a Army Cab toppled in the Kepapilawu area in Mullaitivu.

It is reported that troops from the 59 Division were travelling in the cab.

Those injured have been admitted to the Kepapilawu Army hospital and Mullaitivu hospital.
The Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said that the Attorney General has informed the Acting Inspector General of Police to immediately take into custody 8 persons including the Chairman of Avant Garde Company Nissanka Senadhipathi in relation to the Avant Garde incident.

The case in relation to this incident was filed alleging that the government suffered a loss or Rs. 11,400 million as a result of granting permission to the Avant Garde Company to maintain a floating armoury.
The Supreme Court issued an injunction order today preventing the Death Penalty from being implemented in connection with drug convicts until 30 October.
Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has come back to his motherland and declared that he is now ready to dedicate himself to fulfilling people’s expectations.

A soldier who was on guard at the Akmeemana –Manawila Upananda Junior School has shot a father of two who tried to enter the school by force and he has died.

Police Media Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said that he had entered the school this afternoon by force saying that he had come to take his son from school.

The charge sheet for taking disciplinary action against nine police officers including three DIGs responsible in connection with the Easter Sunday attack is scheduled to be prepared and submitted to the National Police Commission within a few days.

While the investigations regarding this are being carried out with DIG Police Special Investigations Unit Mewan de Silva as team head,  it is said  that the relevant report too is being prepared now. 

Accordingly several charges including allegations of negligence of duty , and acting irresponsibly will be filed against them.

Statements were recorded at the Kalmunai Magistrate court yesterday from three persons including Niyaas Madaniyaa, the younger sister of Zahran Hashim who carried out the Easter Sunday attack.

That was in connection with the Saainthamaruthu attack and the discovery of 2 million ruppesbelonging to Zahran Hashim. 

Reports say that accordingly Kalmunai Magistrate I. N. Riswaan had recorded statements of Zahran Hashim’s younger sister Niyaas Madaniyaa, her husband M. Niyaas and of another woman.

Meanwhile the court also ordered that   the van taken into custody recently    in connection with the transportation of a stock of white cloths be released on a 5 million rupees bail.
General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Senaa Organization Venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara thero made a special revelation.

That is about a couple resident at Atalugama in Bandaragama who did not receive any support from the law.

Venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara revealed this during a news discussion organized in Kandy.
Railway trade unions have decided to obtain legal counsel regarding continuing strike action.

Accordingly trade union representatives and attorneys are to meet and discuss at 10 am regarding the matter.

Train services being gazette as an essential service and the emergency law being in effect has resulted in the situation.

Several employees serving different grades in railway service including railway engine drivers commenced a strike recently standing against the cabinet approved proposals on eliminating salary anomalies, not been brought into effect.

Later strike action was initiated every Thursday from midnight for a period of 24 hours.

Following this the government issued a gazette notification, making train engine driving, road maintenance, signaling and operations, ticket issuing essential services.
The CID submitted a motion to courts yesterday with regard to investigations conducted into arrested Dr. Safi Siyabdeen.

The motion requests permission for 147 mothers who claim they have been sterilised to undergo the H.S.G test.

Previously the CID had requested for approval, however owing to the protest of lawyers appearing on behalf of the plaintiff, the court proceedings were postponed to 11th of July.

Meanwhile, during a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday MP Udaya Gammanpila expressed his views further regarding the matter.

He noted that a presidents commission should be appointed to investigate into this incident.
In an accident that happened last night at Ethagama – Kalutara, the mother, father and two children of the same family sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital.

Our Correspondent said that this accident took place when a car hit a parapet wall.
The Mother in a family of 4 who was rescued after been washed away in ocean currents in Yala – Kirinda last week has succumbed to her injuries.

The 34 year old female was first admitted to the Debarawewa hospital, then transferred to the Ampara hospital and later on was transferred to the ICU of a private hospital in Colombo.

Her husband and 2 daughters also died in the tragedy.

They were residents of Hatton and were on holiday.
The latest report by the World Health Organization revealed that Sri Lanka’s alcohol consumption has increased further.
It also points that Sri Lanka’s population between 15 to 19 years of age amounted to 12.4 Percent of the population and 47.8 percent of Males in that age group were heavy drinkers.
Sri Lanka’s per capita alcohol consumption stood at 7.7 Litres way above the average for South East Asia region which is 4.5 Litres.
Among drinkers, the per capita consumption stood at 18.9 Litres among males and 6.7 Litres among females.
