The 15 per cent hike in train fares will be implemented from today.

The railway department said that  there wouldn’t be any change to the Rs. 10, Rs. 20 and Rs. 40 minimum fares in the third, second and first classes respectively.

However the longest distance covered under the minimum fare has been reduced from 10 kilometres to 7 kilometres.

While all train fare hikes have been rounded up to the nearest five rupees, the fare hike will take place in multiples of Rs. 5/=.
