MP Namal Rajapaksa and five others were remanded yesterday (10) after they arrived at Hambanthota Police Station to give a statement with regards to the agitation staged in front of the Indian Consular Office in Hambantota on last Friday.

After being produced before Hambantota Magistrate and Additional District Judge Manjula Karunarathna last night, they were remanded until 16th of this month



In addition to Namal Rajapaksa MPs D. V. Chanaka, and Prasanna Ranaweera, Provincial Councillors Upali Kodikara, Sampath Athukorala and the convener of “War Heroes for the Motherland”, Attorney – at – Law, Major Ajith Prasanna were remanded.

MP Namal Rajapaksa and 5 others were issued notices to report to Hambantota Police at 5 pm yesterday.

But they arrived at the Police Station at around 7 pm.

Thereafter, they were produced before the Magistrate.

When the prison officials tried to take away the remanded group in a prison bus, the supporters, staged a protest there and even burnt tyres on the road.

They had blocked the entry of the flyover bridge.

Thereafter, STF personnel stepped in an cleared the road.

The group was taken to Tangalle Prisons.

The Joint Opposition staged the protest on 6th this month, to voice their opposition to Mattala International airport being handed over to an Indian firm, on a long-term lease.

28 persons were arrested and have been remanded until 16th of this month.
