B. H. Bawanthi Vidusha of Polonnaruwa Thopawewa Maha Vidyalaya sat for last year’s GCE A/L examination under the commerce stream. She went on to bag the 29th position in the district with her outstanding results.
But poverty is blocking her dream to enter a university.
Bawanthi’s father support her family working for days wage as he does not have a permanent job. Her mother is a nanny.
As Bawanthi’s parents’ days earning is not sufficient to support the family, she had to study using a lamp at night.
Even though she see her friends got to extra classes, Bawanthi did not have money to do so too.
“My mother supported me by looking after other children. She also spent on my brother.. From the money my father bring home, we buy food. I got the chance to enter a university but my parents do not have the money to support us. I like to enter the Sri Jayawardenapura University and become a teacher and go to teach in a rural school,” she said.
